Mac falls asleep during downloads: what is really going on in macOS

Twenty minutes at the machine, then a quick trip to the kitchen. You come back to a progress bar that stopped moving.

Why downloads in particular

macOS decides about sleep by time without input, not by load. A download produces no keystrokes and no pointer movement. To the system the situation therefore looks like a machine nobody is sitting at.

Exactly the same applies to a render, a backup, a build or an upload. Anything that runs long and stays quiet falls into this gap — and those are the jobs where an interruption costs the most.

What well-behaved programs do

Some programs take out an assertion themselves while they work. Browsers often do it for downloads, backup tools usually do. When it works, you never notice that anything was handled at all.

It is not dependable, though. Whether an assertion is taken depends on the individual program, on its version and sometimes on the kind of download. Relying on it means relying on a decision made somewhere else.

Display and system are two things

A dark display is not a problem: the machine carries on, the download runs. Only when the system sleeps does everything stop. Separating those two layers explains most of the confusion in this area.

If you deliberately want the display to stay on — to keep an eye on progress, say — you hold both awake. If you only want the job to finish, you do not need to.

The simple routine

Before starting, pick a span generously above the expected duration: two hours for a large download, twelve for an overnight backup. The menu bar icon fills, the time remaining sits in the panel.

After that there is nothing left to look after. When the span is over, Toxin releases the assertion and the machine behaves exactly as it would without Toxin.

If it happens anyway

  • Check the icon: outlined means no session is running.
  • Lid open? Closed needs lid mode, not just a session.
  • Span too short? Time remaining and end time are in the panel.
  • Network dropped rather than sleep? Then the download broke without the machine sleeping at all.

Common questions

Is keeping the display on enough?

For the download, yes — as long as the system does not sleep. A dark display on its own stops no job.

Do I have to change my energy settings?

No, and that is the point. Toxin keeps the machine awake for a span you choose and afterwards lets whatever is in System Settings apply again.

An interrupted download is rarely the download's fault. Toxin keeps your Mac awake for a span you choose — a menu bar app for macOS, not on the Mac App Store yet.
