Use a MacBook closed with an external monitor: how it works on macOS
The MacBook sits closed next to the big monitor, keyboard and mouse on the desk. Usually it works straight away. Sometimes the monitor simply goes black after you close the lid.
What macOS does on its own
macOS supports running with the lid closed and an external display out of the box. Apple lists as requirements a connected power adapter, an external display, and an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad.
With all of that in place, the Mac stays awake when you close it and the picture moves to the external monitor. No app is needed for that.
Why the monitor still goes black
If one requirement is missing, the Mac sleeps when you close it. The most common reason is missing power: if the MacBook runs on battery, it sleeps when closed, monitor or not.
Just as important: running with the lid closed only keeps the Mac awake while it is being used. Without input, the normal display and sleep times still apply, closed or not.
Where Toxin comes in
If the closed Mac should keep working while nobody is at the keyboard and mouse, during a long export for example, a Toxin session keeps it awake, just as it would open.
Without an external monitor or on the move, closing the lid is a separate rule that no session stops. That is what lid mode is for: on power Toxin handles it on its own, on battery it needs the free Toxin Enhancer, installed once.
Heat when running closed
Closed, the MacBook can shed less heat through its top. Under normal load that is no problem; for hours at full load it should stand free, ideally upright or raised.
A bag or a cupboard shelf, on the other hand, is the wrong place for a working Mac, with or without a monitor.
If the monitor stays black
- Power adapter connected? Without power the Mac sleeps when closed.
- Keyboard and mouse connected? They are part of Apple’s requirements.
- No input for a long time? Then normal sleep applies, closed or not.
- Meant to run without a monitor? Then it takes lid mode.
Common questions
Do I need Toxin to run on a monitor?
Not if you work on the closed Mac with keyboard and mouse and it is on power. Toxin comes in when it should keep running without input or work closed without a monitor.
Does running closed harm the battery?
No more than an open MacBook on power. macOS manages charging itself; for the battery, heat matters more than the lid.
On a monitor, macOS handles running closed by itself. You only need Toxin when the Mac should keep working without input or without a monitor — a menu bar app for macOS, not on the Mac App Store yet.
