Is it safe to run a MacBook with the lid closed on macOS?

A closed MacBook that keeps working is nothing exotic. The risk does not come from the lid; it comes from where the Mac is lying while it works.

What the lid changes

Open, a MacBook also sheds heat through its top. Closed, part of that goes away. The case gets a little warmer; under normal load the Mac hardly notices.

Under sustained full load, a build or an export lasting hours for example, macOS throttles performance before it gets too hot. That protects the hardware but makes the task slower.

The real mistake: the bag

It becomes dangerous when a working Mac goes into a bag, a backpack or a cupboard. The heat builds up there and the Mac has nowhere to send it.

If you want to take the MacBook with you, end the session first or let the span run out. A Mac in a bag should be asleep.

Battery and heat

For the battery, heat does more damage in the long run than any number of charge cycles. A closed Mac under load on a soft surface, a bed or a sofa, heats up for no reason.

On battery, a closed Mac runs until the span ends or the battery runs low. A span instead of “indefinitely” saves you from an empty battery in the morning.

What Toxin does about it

Lid mode only applies while a session is running. When it ends, on its own or by hand, a closed Mac falls asleep again, as it would without Toxin.

On top of that, Toxin resets lid mode when the app quits and once more when it starts. That way it never stays switched on unnoticed if the app did not quit normally.

Working closed, safely

  • On a hard, clear surface, not on a bed or sofa.
  • Under long full load, preferably upright or raised.
  • Never in a bag or backpack while it is working.
  • Choose a span that fits the task.

Common questions

Will the Mac break if it gets hot while closed?

No. macOS lowers performance before things get critical and shuts down in the extreme case. In the long run, it is mostly the battery that suffers from a lot of heat.

Do I have to turn lid mode off after each use?

No. It only applies during a session. When the session ends, the normal rule for the lid applies again.

Working with the lid closed is safe as long as the Mac can breathe. Toxin makes sure lid mode only lasts as long as you need it — a menu bar app for macOS, not on the Mac App Store yet.
