Caffeine app alternative for Mac: a toggle that also has a clock

There is nothing wrong with an on-off toggle. It is the right shape for this job. It just has two places where it leaves you standing.

Why a toggle is the right shape

Keeping a machine awake is not a job you open a window for. One click in the menu bar, a visible state, done. Any app that turns this into a panel with tabs has made the job bigger than it is.

Toxin keeps that shape: an icon in the top right, filled while a session runs, outlined when none does. No dock icon, no window to dismiss.

The first place: forgetting

A toggle without a clock stays on until somebody remembers it. That is why machines are still awake after a weekend and batteries flat without anything having run.

So Toxin has spans: five, fifteen, thirty minutes, one, two, five, twelve, twenty-four hours — or a custom timer in hours and minutes. Time remaining and the end time sit in the panel, so „is that still running?" is answered before it gets asked.

The second place: the closed lid

On macOS, staying awake and lid-closed are two separate rules. An app that serves only the first keeps the machine awake with the lid open and loses it the second the lid goes down.

Toxin serves the second one too, if you ask it to — through a small helper of its own that flips a system setting. Without that helper lid mode has no effect; with it, the machine keeps running closed.

Switching costs nothing

There is nothing to migrate. Keep-awake apps hold no data worth carrying over: no library, no settings that took work. Quit the old one, start the new one, done.

What stays is the habit — same corner of the menu bar, same click. Turn on launch at login and after two days you will not notice that anything changed.

What an alternative should bring

  • A state you can read without clicking — filled or outlined, not just a different colour.
  • A span that ends on its own.
  • An honest answer about the closed lid, condition included.
  • No monthly charge for a toggle.

Common questions

Do I need administrator rights?

Not for ordinary keeping awake. Toxin takes out an IOKit assertion, the same mechanism macOS uses while a video plays. Only lid mode needs its own helper, because it flips a system setting.

Does Toxin change my energy settings?

No. Whatever you have in System Settings stays as it is. The moment a session ends, exactly that applies again.

A toggle with a clock and an honest lid mode — that is all of it, and all it needs to be. Toxin is not on the Mac App Store yet; the home page says what it does and what Pro costs.
